How Flossing Can Save Your Life

Woman flossing teethDid you know cavities aren’t the only threat to your dental health? Gum disease is also a leading cause of tooth loss, but missing teeth isn’t the only concern. The preventable infection can have potentially deadly complications with no treatment. With the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reporting that 50% of Americans have the infection, here’s how flossing can save your life.

What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease is a preventable infection that results from poor oral hygiene, like not flossing. Bacteria found in plaque and tartar accumulations can irritate and infect the gums. Common signs of gum disease include:

  • Red, swollen, or bleeding gums
  • Chronic bad breath
  • Gum recession
  • Tooth sensitivity
  • Loose teeth

Gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease, which is easy to treat and won’t cause any long-term damage. However, early symptoms can go unnoticed with no regular care. If the infection progresses to advanced periodontitis, it can destroy the supporting structures of your teeth, including your jawbone, ultimately leading to tooth loss.

Health Risks of Gum Disease

Bacteria responsible for gum disease can also enter your bloodstream. As it circulates throughout your body, it causes an inflammatory response, increasing your risk of systemic health issues. Gum disease has been linked to many health concerns, like:

  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Respiratory illness
  • Diabetic complications
  • Preterm delivery
  • Low birth weight

Flossing Prevents Gum Disease

Although gum disease is common, it is preventable with good oral hygiene. Brushing alone won’t keep your gums healthy because your toothbrush can’t reach everywhere in your mouth. 40% of your teeth surfaces can be uncleaned. Flossing is the only way to clean areas missed by brushing.

The American Dental Association recommends flossing at least once daily. Use waxed dental floss to clean between each tooth and around the gum line. Gently insert the floss between 2 teeth and form a “C” shape around the tooth. Slide it to the gum line and back up to the crown. Repeat this process for each tooth. If traditional floss is difficult to use, a waterflosser can clean the most hard-to-reach areas using gentle pressurized water.

Besides keeping your mouth clean, reduce risk factors that can lead to gum disease, like smoking or drinking alcohol. Don’t forget to visit your dentist every 6 months for a cleaning and checkup. They’ll remove any plaque or tartar buildup and check your teeth and gums for anything concerning. They can spot the earliest signs of gum disease to stop the infection in its tracks.

You can invest in a healthy mouth and body by giving your gums the attention they deserve.
